Let’s face it, we’re suckers for punishment when it comes to horror. We love the feeling we get when we’re in the moment watching a horror flick or reading that horror classic, but what is it about that fear we experience that makes us go back for more?
The adrenaline rush
We sometimes want to feel things we don’t always get a chance to feel, like an adrenaline rush that makes your heart beat faster and faster. That’s one thing we get from the horror genre; a sense of excitement but through fear. Isn’t that interesting? It may be because we know we’re not actually going through the scary scenario that’s happening in the book we’re reading, so we do a good job separating the two worlds in our heads. It could also be that we want to see how much fear we can handle, and then feel a sense of accomplishment in that we’ve endured it. Whatever the reason, adrenaline is definitely something we treasure in life.
An escape
We also like to do things that allow us to escape from our reality. The horror genre offers that escape into another world other than our own. A world that is unknown to us, and it really pulls us in. As human beings, we’re naturally curious about everything, so it’s no wonder we’d be curious about feeling uneasy when we know it’s not real, of course! It’s what makes us feel alive, in a morbid kind of way. So, cracking open a book of scary stories like Horrotica, by Vanessa Finaughty, could be your ultimate escape from your daily life.
