Water - it’s something we often take for granted with our daily showers and constant glasses of water a day. However, in many developing countries this is not the case. Here are seven facts you didn’t know about water.
1. 1 in every 9 people don’t have access to safe, drinkable water. That is a total of 663 million people around the world.
2. A quick one-minute shower uses at least 20 litres of water. This is more than most people in sub-Saharan Africa use in an entire day for their basic hygiene and drinking needs. They average 7.5 to 20 litres of water per day.
3. 20 litres of water is sufficient for drinking, cooking and hand washing in developing countries, but for other tasks such as bathing or washing laundry, larger volumes of water are needed in excess of 20 litres.
4. It is typical for women and girls in Africa and Asia to walk 6km daily carrying water that weighs over 20kg. That is equivalent to carrying a 40 inch flat screen television!
5. Every day a total of 125 million hours is spent collecting water by mostly women and girls. Sadly this time could be used for other things such as learning in a classroom or just having fun.
6. One third of all schools around the world lack access to sanitation and drinkable water, thereby making attendance rates, especially for girls, very low.
7. Since 1990, approximately 2.6 billion people have acquired access to improved drinking water.
