Let’s face it, we’re suckers for punishment when it comes to the horror genre. We love the feeling we get when we’re reading that horror classic and even watching the film adaptation of it. But then we come across the question of an age-old battle of which of the two is scarier: the book or the movie? Here are some reasons as to why the horror book is way scarier most of the time:
1. Your imagination is your best friend and worst enemy.
Our imagination is what makes us creative and thoughtful, but when it comes to reading a scary book, it can turn into your worst enemy...in the best way possible, of course! With movies adaptations of horror books, it leaves very little to the imagination since everything is done for you visually. When it comes to the books, though, all you can rely on is your imagination picturing every descriptive detail in your head and making it your own. Your interpretation of the story will come from your own nightmares!
2. The story lingers in your head longer.
It doesn't really end when you put the book down. You’ve spent so much time and energy using your imagination to picture the scary story that it just lingers in your head longer than if you’d watched the movie adaptation. Of course, even watching something stimulates your mind enough because of the visuals, but definitely not the same as when you read something and picture it in your own personal way.
3. You experience it alone. Always.
No matter where you are, when you’re reading a horror novel you’re always experiencing it alone. It’s not like when you're watching the movie adaptation with your friends or with your significant other there to protect you, because they’re actually seeing the same thing as you. The experience is, therefore, more comforting. When you’re reading a book, you’re left to your own devices to visualize the details in your head. Even if you’re reading with other people around you, the act of reading itself is done on your own. It’s a scary thought...but that’s what makes the experience!
Horror books and their movie counterparts obviously share similarities, but it’s ultimately the book that will cause you to interpret stories in your own way, which may be scarier than just watching it.
